Apply F = ma to each of two particles joined by a string over a smooth pulley.

Question 1

Two particles AA and BB, of masses 3 kg and 1.5 kg, are attached to the ends of a light inextensible string. The string passes over a smooth fixed pulley and the particles hang freely with the string taut. The system is released from rest. Take g = 9.8 m s⁻². Find the acceleration of the particles. Give your answer to 3 significant figures.
